Investing in Sustainable Access to Communications: The Role of Telecom Energy Services Companies

1 March, 2024

Access to reliable power is a significant challenge for telecom operators (MNO) and Tower Company’s (TowerCo) in emerging markets where inadequate grid infrastructure forces heavy reliance on diesel fuel at tower sites, leading to escalated energy costs and carbon footprint on tower sites.

According to the International Finance Corporation (IFC), by 2030, the number of off-grid and bad-grid sites relying on old diesel generators is expected to reach 745,000, with 84% concentrated in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Asia Pacific region. Despite industry commitments to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, the transition to renewable energy in the mobile industry is slow.

Energy Vision, a pureplay ESCO, focuses solely on substituting diesel-powered solutions with hybrid renewables to improve connectivity in underserved areas and minimize environmental impact. With a dedicated approach and advanced in-house management platforms for power O&M, Energy Vision are technology agnostic, having the advantage of being able to switch between power equipment suppliers based on site requirements and technology advancements and have strong flexibility in adapting to emerging markets, tower site requirements and demands of strategic customers.
